Ohio’s BATAVIA (WXIX) – During a contentious discussion between county commissioners and volunteers at the Clermont County Animal Shelter on Wednesday, long-term issues such as unutilized donations and staff resignations were discussed. Volunteers who spoke at the meeting suggested the shelter could close if the concerns didn’t get fixed. They mentioned that poor communication with the county and dilapidated kennels were issues that might force the entire crew to leave the shelter. “You’ve been saying help is coming since January,” one volunteer complained. September is here. It will never materialize. According to a volunteer, the kennel received a $60,000 donation for a washer and dryer, but the county still hasn’t bought it after more than a year.

According to Michelle Gonzalez, one of the 40 volunteers at the shelter, unhygienic conditions are the result of a staffing shortage. Gonzalez declared, “I don’t personally think it’s fair to have an animal in a cage from 2 or 3 p.m. until 9 a.m. or 10 a.m., when they actually get to these dogs.” It implies that they spend a significant portion of their days sitting in their own feces and eating breakfast and dinner there, which contributes to the development of other illnesses. Three times a week, vetted prisoners from the county jail will assist with facility cleaning, according to Clermont County Commissioner David Painter. The refuge needs more attention, according to volunteers.

Gonzalez remarked, “I appreciate the efforts that have been made; being a commissioner is a tough job.” They seem to be forgetting that these are living creatures. Process and bureaucracy, then, are effective when applied to stop signs and red lights. However, there are creatures there that live in quite depressing conditions every day. Volunteers at the shelter stated that donations are still being accepted. When this story was published, FOX19 NOW had contacted the county commission for a statement but had not received a response.
