A tight-knit community is on high alert as Buddy, a beloved American Pit Bull Terrier, went missing over the weekend during a family outing in Cedar Hill State Park. Known for his playful energy and gentle demeanor, Buddy slipped away from his family while they were exploring one of the park’s scenic trails, sparking an ongoing community effort to bring him home.
Buddy’s owners, the Millers, described the moment as both shocking and heartbreaking. “He’s not just a pet; he’s part of our family,” said Jamie Miller, Buddy’s primary caretaker. The family was hiking along a popular trail when Buddy chased a squirrel off the path, and despite their best efforts to call him back, he never returned. The Millers spent hours searching the area before notifying park rangers, and soon after, concerned residents joined in.
Since Sunday, volunteers, park officials, and animal advocacy groups have combed the trails, dense brush, and lakeside areas of Cedar Hill State Park. Fliers bearing Buddy’s picture have been posted throughout the park and around town, and his family has turned to social media, where hundreds of locals have shared posts and offered tips and support.
The Cedar Hill community has quickly rallied around the Millers, with locals forming search parties, providing updates, and sharing Buddy’s story. Cedar Hill resident Mark Sanchez, who owns a dog walking service, offered free assistance to anyone willing to search and even provided refreshments to volunteers.
Social media has been instrumental in spreading the word, with the hashtag #BringBuddyHome trending locally. The family’s initial post, which includes pictures of Buddy and his detailed description, has already reached over 10,000 shares across multiple platforms.
“We’re just so grateful to everyone who’s helping us,” Jamie Miller added. “We couldn’t do this alone.”
Buddy is a 4-year-old, tan-colored American Pit Bull Terrier with a white patch on his chest and a friendly, approachable personality. Standing about two feet tall, Buddy is known to respond to treats and familiar voices. The Millers have offered a $500 reward for any information leading to his safe return, emphasizing that he is not a danger to anyone who might approach him.
Local pet experts have offered safety advice to anyone who may spot Buddy. Amber Castillo, a dog trainer based in Cedar Hill, suggests keeping a calm demeanor if Buddy is spotted and calling his name gently to avoid spooking him. She advises not to chase after him but to offer treats or gently call his name to gain his trust.
As temperatures continue to rise this week, the urgency to locate Buddy has intensified, with concerns over his access to water and shade.
The Millers are encouraging people to join in the search, either in person at Cedar Hill State Park or online by sharing posts and keeping an eye out in neighboring areas.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the family directly through their social media post or reach out to the Cedar Hill State Park rangers at their main office.
As the search enters its third day, the Cedar Hill community remains hopeful that Buddy will be found safe and soon return to the loving family that’s waiting for him.
