Breaking News: Baby Dies After Assault in Topeka
Topeka, Kansas– A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded earlier today when a baby was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead following an alleged assault in Topeka. Authorities were called to a home on the 1000 block of Oakwood Avenue just after 2:00 PM, where emergency responders discovered the infant with severe injuries.
The baby, a 7-month-old girl, was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite efforts to resuscitate her, she was declared dead within the hour. Law enforcement quickly identified the child’s mother, 24-year-old Emily Foster, as a person of interest. Foster has since been taken into custody and is facing questioning regarding the circumstances of the infant’s death.
A police spokesperson confirmed that the injuries were consistent with signs of abuse, and the investigation has been classified as a homicide. “This is a devastating loss, and we are doing everything in our power to ensure justice is served,” said Topeka Police Chief Mark Riley during a press conference earlier this afternoon.
Neighbors are in shock over the incident, with one local resident describing Foster as “quiet but seemed like a good mom.” Authorities are working to uncover more details surrounding the baby’s last hours and whether there were any prior reports of neglect or abuse at the home.
The community has rallied around the family, with a small memorial already beginning to form outside the residence. A candlelight vigil is expected to take place later this evening in honor of the young life lost.
Topeka police are continuing their investigation, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
